Lonely Sailor

Lonely Sailor

April 1983

Where are you going young man

on such a cold day?

I'm going to join the navy, Sir.

I want to sail the sea.

How does your family feel young man

now that you want to sail the sea?

My family are all gone, Sir.

There's no one left but me.

Is there no one who loves you, young man?

No one for you to leave?

There is a girl who loves me, Sir,

who lives over in Markeave.

You can't want both, young man.

Don't leave the girl to go to sea.

I do believe I'll stay here, Sir

and ask her to marry me.

How did you know, Sir,

staying here was best for me?

Because I once left a girl, young man,

to be a lonely sailor of the sea.

  1. There's something about young men leaving love and going to sea that gives me the tingles.

    Nice poem.
